“Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes… Including you.” - Anne Lamott
I wanted my day to be about turning up fully without disruption from my notifications. Living in the moment and to not get distracted by my phone buzzing, so I switched it off. I sat and watched the house martins, who have built several nests up in the eaves of our house. One nest is situated right outside of our bedroom window and this morning was the first time I have seen them use the nest this year. They tend to use the other nests at the front of the house. I wonder if they need the extra space.
The house martin is a small bird with dark blue-black head and wings and white under parts. It has a distinctive white rump with a forked tail. It spends much of its time on the wing collecting bugs and insects. The bird's nest is made of mud. They are summer migrants and spend their winters in Africa. According to the RSPB, although still numerous and widespread, recent moderate declines earn them a place on the Red List.
Every morning and every evening during the spring and summer I watch the house martins and swallows dancing in the sky, which is such a delight. A simple pleasure whilst sitting quietly, looking up, taking a moment to appreciate these amazing, acrobatic, little birds.
Switching off my phone today has helped to repair my soul with some intentional escapism. Time better spent watching the birds, getting outside into nature and stopping to smell the roses which have started to bloom in my garden.
Staying naturally curious…
